Inclined planes in perspective A very satisfying project to consider experimenting with the perspective of inclined planes is in the perspective of a flight of stairs. A simplified staircase is wedged-shaped, so the vanishing point can be located above or below (depending on whether the stairs are ascending or descending) the vanishing point of the base of the stairs and the horizontal steps, which converge to a point on the horizon line.

The perspective of inclined planes is well demonstrated with a closed and open book, where VP2 is the vanishing point of the closed book and the vanishing points of the inclined pages of the open book are located on a vertical line through VP2. The upper edges of the open pages are parallel to the ground plane and so converge to VP1 on the horizon line.
